| Evaporation | Process whereby the heat of the sun changes water on the Earth's surface from a liquid to a gas. |
| Condensation | Return of water vapor to a liquid state by cooling. |
| Precipitation | Liquid or solid water that falls from clouds to Earth. |
| Transpiration | Release of water vapor from plants' leaves into the air. |
| Runoff | Precipitation that runs off the ground. |
| Groundwater | Water from rain and melting snow that seeps into the ground and is stored beneath the Earth's surface. |
| Source | Place where a stream or river begins. |
| Mouth | Place where a river or stream ends by flowing into another body of water. |
| Velocity | Distance water flows during some period of time, such as meters per second or feet per second. |
| Bed Load | Sediment carried along he bottom of the channel of a stream or river. |
| Tributaries | Feeder streams. |
| Topography | Physical characteristics of the land. |
| Gradient | Slope of a river channel. |
