ecosystem a community of organisms and the environment in which they live

community a group of organisms that live in the same area and interact with each other
habitat the place where an organism lives and can find everything it needs to survive
niche the role a plant or animal plays in its habitat
photosynthesis the process that plants use to make their own food
chlorophyll a green pigment in plants that allows a plant cell to use light to make food
producer a living thing, such as a plant, that can make its own food
consumer a living thing that cannot make its own food and must eat other living things
decomposer a living thing that gets energy by breaking down dead organisms and animal wastes into simpler substances
food chain the transfer of food energy between organisms in an ecosystem
food web a group of food chains that overlap
energy pyramid a diagram that shows how much energy is passed from one organism to the next at each level in a food chain
succession a gradual change of the kinds of organisms in an ecosystem
extinction a plant or an animal species that is no longer living or existing
