Energy in Ecosystems

| environment | all the living and nonliving things that surround and affect the organism |
| ecosystem | a community of organisms and the environment in which they live |
| population | all the organisms of the same kind that live together in an ecosystem |
| community | a group of organisms that live in the same area and interact with each other |
| habitat | the place where an organism lives and can find everything it needs to survive |
| niche | the role a plant or animal plays in its habitat |
| photosynthesis | the process that plants use to make their own food |
| chlorophyll | a green pigment in plants that allows a plant cell to use light to make food |
| producer | a living thing, such as a plant, that can make its own food |
| consumer | a living thing that cannot make its own food and must eat other living things |
| decomposer | a living thing that gets energy by breaking down dead organisms and animal wastes into simpler substances |
| food chain | the transfer of food energy between organisms in an ecosystem |
| food web | a group of food chains that overlap |
| energy pyramid | a diagram that shows how much energy is passed from one organism to the next at each level in a food chain |
| succession | a gradual change of the kinds of organisms in an ecosystem |
| extinction | a plant or an animal species that is no longer living or existing |
