| Term | Definition |

| Mineral | Naturally occurring, inorganic substance with a definite chemical composition and an orderly cool atomic structure that is predictable. |
| Crystallization | Process where particles that have dissolved in a liquid or a melt solidify. |
| Crystal | Solid geometric form of a mineral produced by a repeating pattern of atoms |
| Silicate | a mineral that has silicon and oxygen in its crystal structure |
| Physical Property | Characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance, such as color, luster, streak, hardness, cleavage, fracture, density) |
| Luster | The way a mineral reflects or absorbs light on its surface |
| Streak | The color of a mineral in powdered form |
| Hardness | The resistance of a mineral to being scratched; measured 1 (talc) to 10 (Diamond) on the Friedrich Mohs scale |
| Cleavage | Breaking with smooth, flat surfaces |
| Fracture | Breaking in uneven surfaces |
| Density | Mass divided by volume; how "squished together" the matter is for its size |
| Flourescence | The ability to glow, like calcite and flourite |
| Ore | Rock with desired substance that is mined for profit |
| Gemstone | Rare and attractive mineral that can be worn as jewelry |
