Earth/Space Vocab

TermDefinition
Universe A whole body of things that exist
Atmosphere The mass of gasses surrounding a heavenly body (planet)
Star A natural body visible in the sky, especially at night, that gives off light
Satellite A celestial body orbiting around the Earth or another planet
Comets Bright, heavenly bodies that develop a cloudy tail as they move closer to the sun
Asteroids One of thousands of small planets between Mercury and Jupiter
Meteoroids Small bodies of matter in the solar system seen when falling into our atmosphere
Astronomy The science of heavenly bodies and their sizes/motions/makeups
Dwarf planet An object the size of a planet but is NOT a planet, moon or satellite
Solar system A star with a group of heavenly bodies that revolve around it
Rotation To turn on an axis or center
Revolution To move in an orbit((One Earth revolution takes 365.25 days)
Elliptical orbit The orbit path of some planets that is oval shaped like a flattened circle
Orbit The path taken by one body circling around another body
Axis A straight line on which a body(ex. planet) rotates
Gravity The force of attraction between particles. It gets stronger as mass increases
Seasons Four quarters into which the year is commonly divided
Tilt A sloping surface or slant. The Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees
