Lodging Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

full service hotel | a large hotel that offers a full range of services including luggage assistance, one or more restaurants, one or more lounges, room services, meeting and event space, spa and fitness facilities and more |
concierge | is a hotel staff member who helps quests make arrangements such as dinner reservations. |
convention hotel | a type of lodging designed to provide for the needs of small to large groups for meetings, events, or trade shows |
trade show | is an exhibit during which people show the goods and services they have to sell. usually for a specific industry or product group |
luxury hotel | provides the highest level of amenities, service, room furnishing, public spaces, and technology - very pricey! |
extended stay hotels | offer lodging for guests who need to stay someone for more than 5 days at a time. can include a kitchen, living area and often are more "home Like" in décor and furnishings |
limited service property | focuses on charging lower prices, which it is able to do by offering less services. usually categorized as budget or limited services meaning no room service, or other services beyond housekeeping. |
budget hotels | have the lowest rates and the least service. The goal of these business is to focus on offering a comfortable, clean space to sleep at the lowest rate |
continental breakfast | consists of breakfast foods that do not need to be cooked |
specialty accommodations | includes a variety of accommodations that provide less personal service than a full service hotel but more than a motel |
bed-and- breakfast (B&B) | a private home offering one or more guest rooms usually include a home cooked meal and opportunities to interact with other guests. included under specialty accommodations category |
hotel management | the day-to-day running of the hotel. often called hotel operation |
referral system | a group of independent hotels that creates central office for reservations and marketing |
affiliation group or consortium | also called a referral system |
rack rate | the official rate for one night's lodging at a lodging property |
room rate | the price actually charged to a guest for one night's lodging |
guest mix | the percentage of each guest segment that is staying at a lodging property |
modified American Plan | a food plan that includes only two meals, usually breakfast and dinner |
front office | divided into four categories including: front desk, reservations, telecommunications, and uniformed services |
rooms division | handles all tasks involved in preparing and selling rooms |
property management system | technology used to run lodging properties |
reservations manager | responsible for keeping an accurate room inventory |
front desk clerk agent | primarily responsible for guest check in and check out |
front office managers | handle two very important tasks: forecasting and scheduling |
hotel guest cycle | includes: pre-arrival, arrival, occupancy, and departure |
function room | rooms that customer can rent for dinners, ceremonies and celebrations |
check-in | the process of registering a guest, determining method of payment, assigning rooms, and gives out the room keys |
guest folio | a collection of charges including: food, beverages, phone calls, and gift shop purchases charged to the room |
occupancy stage | in this stage of the hotel guest cycle, the guests are actually using and staying in the rooms |
central reservations center | an office that handles reservations for all the hotels in a chain or affiliation group |
departure stage | guests are packing up, reviewing the bill, correcting any errors, arranging transportation, and paying the bill |
unguaranteed | when a reservation is made, but not promised |
