Photosynthesis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food |
| Heterotroph | An organism that can NOT make its own food, and must get energy from other organisms. |
| Photosynthesis | Organisms absorb energy from the sun and use that energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars and oxygen |
| Photosynthesis | Light + Carbon Dioxide + Water -> Glucose + Oxygen |
| Chloroplast | Green organelles inside plant cells |
| Chlorophyll | The green pigment inside the chloroplast that absorbs sunlight |
| Cellular Respiration | Cells break down glucose (and other molecules from food) in the presence of oxygen to release usable energy. |
| Cellular Respiration | Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy |
| Mitochondria | The organelle where cellular respiration takes place |
| ATP | The molecule that contains energy made by cellular respiration |
| Carbon Cycle | The process by which carbon moves between organisms and their physical environment. |
| Carbon Reservoirs | A place in the environment where carbon is stored |
