Photosynthesis

Autotroph An organism that makes its own food
Heterotroph An organism that can NOT make its own food, and must get energy from other organisms.
Photosynthesis Organisms absorb energy from the sun and use that energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars and oxygen
Photosynthesis Light + Carbon Dioxide + Water -> Glucose + Oxygen
Chloroplast Green organelles inside plant cells
Chlorophyll The green pigment inside the chloroplast that absorbs sunlight
Cellular Respiration Cells break down glucose (and other molecules from food) in the presence of oxygen to release usable energy.
Cellular Respiration Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
Mitochondria The organelle where cellular respiration takes place
ATP The molecule that contains energy made by cellular respiration
Carbon Cycle The process by which carbon moves between organisms and their physical environment.
Carbon Reservoirs A place in the environment where carbon is stored
