Fresh Water
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Well | A human made hole that is deeper than the level of water |
| Water Cycle | The continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean |
| Evaporation | Takes place when water from the oceans and the Earthâs surface changes into water vapor. Energy from the sun causes evaporation. Water gains energy during evaporation. |
| Condensation | Takes place when water vapor changes into water droplets that form clouds in the atmosphere. Water looses energy in condensation. |
| Precipitation | Is rain, sleet, snow, or hail that falls from clouds onto the Earthâs land and oceans. |
| Percolation | Is the downward movement of water through pores and other spaces due to gravity. |
| Runoff | Is precipitation that flows over land into streams and rivers. This water later enters oceans. |
| Tributary | A stream that flows into a lake or into a larger stream |
| Water Table | The upper surface of underground water; the upper boundary of the zone of saturation |
| Aquifer | A body of rock or sediment that stores ground water and allows the flow of ground water |
| Porosity | The percentage of the total volume of a rock or sediment that consists of open spaces |
| Permeability | The ability of a rock or sediment to let fluids pass through its open spaces, or pores |
| Artesian Spring | A spring whose water flows from a crack in the cap rock over the aquifer |
| Impermable | A rock that stops the flow of water |
| Nonpoint-Source Pollution | |
| Zone of Aeration | Rain water passes through |
| Zone of Saturation | Spaces between rocks are filled with water |
| Transpiration | When leave moisture is turned into water vapor |
