Stars, Galaxies, HR Diagram

QuestionAnswer
Apparent Magnitude The brightness of a star as seen from Earth
Absolute Magnitude The actual brightness of a star
Light-Year The distance that light travels in one year; about 9.46 trillion kilometers
Red giant A large, reddish star late in its life cycle.
White Dwarf A small, hot, dim star that is the leftover center of an old star.
H-R Diagram A diagram that shows the relationship between a star’s surface temperature and its absolute magnitude.
Main Sequence The location on the H-R diagram where most stars lie.
Black Hole An object so massive and dense that even light cannot escape its gravity
Spiral Galaxy Galaxy that looks like a sphere with arms extending outward.
Elliptical Galaxy Galaxy that looks like a sphere or a stretched out sphere.
Irregular Galaxy Leftover galaxies with no distinct shape.
Nebula A large cloud of gas and dust in interstellar space; a region in space where stars are born or where stars explode at the end of their lives
