Stars, Galaxies, HR Diagram

| Apparent Magnitude | The brightness of a star as seen from Earth |
| Absolute Magnitude | The actual brightness of a star |
| Light-Year | The distance that light travels in one year; about 9.46 trillion kilometers |
| Red giant | A large, reddish star late in its life cycle. |
| White Dwarf | A small, hot, dim star that is the leftover center of an old star. |
| H-R Diagram | A diagram that shows the relationship between a star’s surface temperature and its absolute magnitude. |
| Main Sequence | The location on the H-R diagram where most stars lie. |
| Black Hole | An object so massive and dense that even light cannot escape its gravity |
| Spiral Galaxy | Galaxy that looks like a sphere with arms extending outward. |
| Elliptical Galaxy | Galaxy that looks like a sphere or a stretched out sphere. |
| Irregular Galaxy | Leftover galaxies with no distinct shape. |
| Nebula | A large cloud of gas and dust in interstellar space; a region in space where stars are born or where stars explode at the end of their lives |
