Chapter 9 Vocabulary - Surface Water

bed load sand, pebbles, and boulders that are moved along the bed of a stream and that are too heavy to be carried in suspension
divide high area of land that separates two watershed areas (example: the Continental Divide)
floodplain a low plain adjacent to a river that is formed chiefly of river sediment and is subject to flooding
solution a mixture of two disolveable materials
watershed a drainage basin for any body of water
meander a bend or curve in a stream channel
stream bank land bordering the edges of a river or stream
eutrophication process by which a body of water becomes too rich in dissolved nutrients, leading to plant growth that depletes oxygen
wetland a land area that is covered with a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year
transpiration evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant
suspension if the particles in a solvent are so large that they settle out unless the mixture is constantly stirred or agitated
discharge an outflow of water from a stream, pipe, groundwater, aquifer, or watershed; the opposite of recharge
flood an overflowing of water in a normally dry area
runoff water that flows over the ground surface rather than soaking into the ground
stream channel the portion of a stream with the greatest depth. The path along which a stream is currently flowing on a flood plain
delta a landform made of sediment that is deposited where a river flows into an ocean or lake
rejuvenation process during which a stream resumes downcutting toward its base level, increasing its rate of flow
