What is radiometric dating? technique that uses the natural decay rate of unstable isotopes found in materials in order to calculate age of that material
What is an isotope? Atoms of element that have same number of protons but different number of neutrons
How many isotopes do elements do isotopes usually have? Most have several elements
How do scientists determine Earth's age? Scientists use metiorits which don't undergo erosion and are believed to have formed around the same time as Earth
How do fossils help determine the age of other different organisms? Index fossils can help determine organisms that only existed during a certain period of time over large geographical areas
What different units of time does the geographic time scale have? era, periods, and epochs
What is an epoch? Smallest unit, lasts several million years
What is the longest unit of time? The era is ten to hundreds of million years and consists of two or more periods
What is a period? Lasts ten of millions of years
Where did the names for eras derive from? paleozaic, mesozic, and genozoic
What does paleozioc, mesozoic, and genozoic mean? Paleozoic- "ancient life", mrsozoic- "middle life", genozoic- "recent life"
What is the most widely accepted hypothesis of Earths origin? The solar system was formed by a condensing nebula, and the sun formed from it. Over time most of the material in the nebula pulled together from gravity. Unused materials circled the sun and long after with most collisions the debris pulled into the plan
What is a nebula? A cloud of gas and dust
What were the conditions of Earth during its first 700 million years? Violent and very hot, many asteroids, and comets struck the planet which released enormous amounts of heat
