ATP Adenosine Triphosphate. It is the chemical energy molecule of the cell.
Base A substance that accepts hydrogen ions when in water.
Carbohydrate An organic molecule composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, in a strict ratio. Examples include starches and sugars.
Electrolyte A substance that breaks down into ions when in solution and is capable of conducting electricity.
Enzyme A biological catalyst. It speeds up a reaction.
Inorganic Compound A compound that does not contain carbon.
Lipid An organic compound formed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Hydrogen and carbon far outnumber oxygen atoms. Examples are neutral fats and steroids.
Nucleic Acid Large molecules composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus. They compose DNA and RNA.
Organic Compound Molecules that contain carbon.
pH The symbol for hydrogen concentration; a measure of the relative acid or base level of a substance or solution.
Protein A complex nitrogenous substance, the main building materials of cells.
Salt Ionic compound that dissociates into charged particles (except H+ and OH-) when dissolved in water.
Connective Tissue A primary tissue; form and function varies extensively, but include support, storage and protection.
Epithelial Tissue One of the primary tissues; covers the surface of the body and lines the body cavities, ducts and vessels.
Matrix The intercellular substance of any tissue; most often applies to connective tissue.
Muscle Tissue A highly specialized tissue that contracts and shortens to produce movement.
Nervous Tissue Cells specialized to receive and conduct electrochemical impulses.
Active Transport Movement of molecules across a cell membrane that requires energy.
Passive Transport Movement of materials across a cell membrane that does not require energy.
Solute Pump A form of active transport that uses ATP to energize protein carriers.
Neoplasm An abnormal growth of cells, sometimes cancerous.
