What Is Biology? The study of living things
what are the three studies of biology? botony, zoology, human anatomy and physiology
what are aniosperms? flowering seed plants
what are the four parts of an angiosperm? flower,leaf,stem, root
What are the functions of each? flowers reproduce, leaves make food, stems transport food and minerals, roots anchor plant and give it water
what are the three stem types? woody,herbacious,vine
what are the two root systems? fibrous, taproot
what are the three classes of growth cycles? perennial,biennial,annual
what are the two types of grasses and the importance of each? turf:is used to cover areas of landfood:they give us food
what is the deciduous plant? It loses its leaves in the fall
what is a monocot? it has one cotyledon
what is a dicot? it has many cotyledon
what are the three basic shapes of leaves? long and narrow, broad and flat, needlelike
what are the two parts of a leaf? blad and petiole
What are the types of margins? toothed, smooth, lobed
what are the veins? they transport the food
what is a sessile? leaf without a petiole
what is a stipule? small leaflike structure that protects the leaf
what is a bud? it covers the developing leaf. like a uterus
What is a simple leaf? it has one petiole
what is a compound leaf? it has more than one petiole
where does photosynthesis occur in the cell? chloroplasts
What part of the plant does photosynthesis occur in? the leaf
what is the molecule that has green pigment? chlorophyll
what are the three types of leaf tissue? structural, vascular, meristimatic
What are the three types of Structural tissue? Epidermal,cork,parenchyma
What are the two types of vascular tissue? Xylem, and Phloem
What is meristimatic tissue? used for growth and repair. stem cells
What is the structural tissue? The body of the plant. bones
What is the Vascular tissue? the sap-conducting tissues. veins and arteries
What is the nucleus? the control center for the cell
What is the cell membrane? seperates the cell from its environment
What is the cell wall? the outside of the cell membrane and protects the cell from outside force
What is chloroplasts? where photosynthesis takes place in the cell
What is a stomata? tiny holes in leaf that water passes in and out of
what are the guard cells? they control the stomata
what is transpiration? the loss of water in leaf through the stomata
what are the products of photosynthesis? glucose and oxygen
what factors effect photosynthesis? heat,water,sunlight,carbon dioxide
what is the most important factor in photosynthesis? sunlight
Where does the oxygen in photosynthesis come from? water, H2O
What is the cell wall made of? cellulose
What are thylakoids? stacks of specialized disks
What causes leaves to change color;what triggers it? chorophyll deterioration; the days get shorter in the fall so that means less sunlight
what are the three secondary leaf pigments and what colors do they show? xanthophyll:produces yellowish colorscarotene:produces yellowish orange colorsanthocyanin:produces bright red,blue and purple
