Term | Definition |

strata | In geology, a layer of rock |
nonconformity | An unconformity between sedimentary rock and either igneous or metamorphic rock |
unconformity | A surface of erosion that separates one layer of rock from another |
paraconformity | An unconformity for which there is no evidence, but geologists think should exist |
angular unconformity | an unconformity where the strata are tilted relative to each other |
disconformity | An unconformity between two layers of sedimentary rock. |
Intrusion | "Veins" of igneous rock that shoot right through several layers of sedimentary rock |
dikes | intrusions that run perpendicular to the strata |
sill | intrusions that run parallel to the strata |
humus | the decayed remains of once-living creatures |
Lamination | A layer of rock less then 1 centimeter thick |
Laminae | Many layers of lamination stacked together |
Sediments | Sand, silt, minerals, and other components of soil |
Delta | A typically fan shaped area where a river deposits it's sediments at it's mouth |
