Bacteria Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Bacteria A single celled prokaryote
Cellular Respiration The process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen
Endospore A structure produced by prokaryotes, such as bacteria, in unfavorable conditions; a thick wall encloses the DNA and some of the cytoplasm
Cytoplasm A gel-like fluid that moves structures throughout the cell
Binary Fission When one cell divides to form two identical cells
Pasteurization When food is heated to a temperature that is high enough to kill most harmful bacteria without changing the taste of the food
Ribosome Chemical factories where proteins are produced
Flagellum A long, whiplike structure that helps a cell to move
Conjugation A process in which bacteria produce sexually
Decomposer Organisms that break down large, complex chemicals in dead organisms into small, simple chemicals
