Rock- a a natural solid mixture of minerals and grains
Grains- fragments that make up a rock. Rocks are classified by their grain size, shape and chemical compisition.

Compostion the minerals or chemicals that make a rock.
Igneous Rocks Made from magma and lava Extrusive- lava, cools quickly forming small crystals, ex. Obsidian; as lava leaves the volcano, gases escape leaving holes in the rocks. Ex. Pumice
Extrusive lava, cools quickly forming small crystals
Intrusive magma, cools slowly making large crystals. Ex. granite
Silica Light colored rocks/high silica content, dark colored rocks/low silica content
Sedimentary Rocks Erosion, Deposition, Compaction, & Cementation
Clastic - rock fragments are squeezed together.
C. Organic - remains of plants and animals. Ex. coal, shale, limestone
D. Chemical dissolved solutions crystalize. Ex. rock salt
IV. Metamorphic Rocks The changing of one type of rock to another through heat and pressure.
Plastic Deformation- permanent change in shape by bending and folding,
Foliated- Visible parallel layers of minerals
D. Nonfoliated- mineral grains arranged randomly
V. Rock Cycle A series of processes on and below the Earth’s surface that slowly changes one type of rock to another
