What are natural resources? anything created naturally on Earth that humans use
What are examples of natural resources? water, coal, sunlight, oil
What are nonrenewable resources? resources that cannot be replaced in a lifetime
What are renewable resources? resources that can be replaced in a lifetime
What are examples of nonrenewable resources? coal, gasoline, natural gas
What are examples of renewable resources? trees, oxygen, fish, water
What is alternative energy? type of energy that does not use fossil fuels and is environmentally friendly
Why can't nonrenewable resources be replaced? the process takes too long
What does it mean to conserve resources? to use resources wisely or save them
How does coal form? vegetation (plants) are buried quickly and a fast rate and it takes millions of years
Find the negative resource use. Oil is taken from the ground and burned for fuel.
Find the positive resource use. Fresh water is used for growing crops.
What needs to happen for metal ores to be created? the area had to have volcanoes there long ago
What is a potential hazard of collecting fresh water? Animals poop in the water, and there is litter in the water.
Why is mining for coal bad? It destroys habitats.
Why is burning coal bad? It releases dangerous gases.
What is a synthetic material? a resource that is created through a chemical process and does not form naturally
How do we use geothermal heating? heat from the melted rock below Earth's surface
Find the alternative energy sources. wind, solar, geothermal
What is a problem with using geothermal heating? some areas do not have good geothermal resources/reservoirs
What is a problem with using solar energy? when the sun isn't out, we have an issue
What is a problem with using wind energy? you need consistent winds
