Kinetic molecular theory based on the idea that particles of matter are always in motion
Pressure the amount of force exerted per unit area of a surface
Boyles law The volume of a gas at constant temperature varies inversely with the pressure exerted on it
Charles' law the volume of a given mass of an ideal gas is proportional to its temperature
Thermal energy The total potential and kinetic energy of the particles in an object
Temperature A Measure of something how hot or cold it is
Heat The energy transferred between objects that are different temperatures
Kinetic energy Energy of motion
Vaporization The change of state from a liquid to a gas
Sublimation The change of a substance from solid to a gas
Condensation The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Deposition Change of state to A gas to solid
Radiation Transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
Conduction Transfer of energy through direct contact
Convection Transfer of energy due to the movement of matter
Convection current Circular movement of air caused by the cycles of warm air rising in cool air sinking
Thermal expansion An increase in the size of a substance when the temperature is increased
Thermal contraction The contraction of matter caused by a change in heat
Specific heat The heat required to raise the temperature of the unit mass of the given substance
Thermal insulator A material that conducts thermal energy poorly
Thermal conductor A material through which energy can be transferred as heat
Metal Element that is shiny and Well conducts heat and electricity
Malleable Term used to describe a material that can be pounded into shapes
Ductile A term used to describe a material that can be pulled out into a long wire
Conductivity The ability of an object to transfer heat or electricity to another object
Reactivity Ease and speed with which an element combines or react with other substances
Corrosion Jewel wearing away of metal element due to a chemical reaction
Alloy Mixture of two or more metals one of which is metal
Particle accelerator Machine that moves atomic nuclei higher and higher speeds until they crash into another
Matter Thing that has mass and occupies space
Atom Smallest particle of an element
Substance Matter with a composition that is always the same
Element Pure substance that consists entirely of one type of Atom
Compound Substance made up of two or more atoms joined by chemical bonds
Mixture Combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
