| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion |
| nonrenewable energy | a source of energy that will eventually run out, such as oil, coal, and natural gas |
| potential energy | stored energy that an object has because of its position |
| radiant energy | energy that moves in waves. Radiant energy from the sun is the source of most energy on Earth |
| renewable energy | Wood, wind, hydro, geotermal, tidal, and solar are forms of renewable energy |
| transformation | the conversion of energy from one form of energy to another, such as the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy, or of potential energy to kinetic energy |
| chemical weathering | occurs when water containing dissolved gases and other chemicals causes minerals in rocks to be changed, leading to the deterioration of the rock. |
| gas | state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume. Has a lot of space between them |
| liquid | state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape. Molecules are not packed closely together |
| physical weathering | when water, ice, animals, or plant roots break apart rocks producing small particles and sand. There is no change to the minerals that form the rock |
| solid | state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume. Molecules in a solid are densely packed |
| solution | a type of mixture in which a solid material, such as salt, is dissolved in a liquid, such as water |
| universal solvent | a term for water because it dissolves a large number of substances |
| water cycle | the circular pathway by which water moves through the envirnoment |
| conservation | the careful use of natural resources |
| development | the processes of city building, by which a country changes from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy |
| environment | the conditions or surroundings in which a plant or animal lives |
| EPA | Environmental Protection Agency is a federal government group responsible for the protetion and regulation of resources. |
| erosion | a group of natural processes including weathering, transportation, and dissolving by which material is worn away from Earth's surface |
| natural resources | things, such as land, water, atmosphere and all plants and animals in an environment and are necessary or useful to humans |
| nonrenewable resource | any natural resources from the Earth that exist in limited supply and cannot be replaced if they are used up |
| pollution | an introduction of harmful substances into an environment |
| recycle | to alter or adapt an object for new use without changing the essential form or nature of the object |
| reduce | to diminish in size, amount, extent or number |
| renewable resources | any natural resources that can replenish themselves naturally over time, such as wood or solar energy |
| resource | materials that people use |
| reuse | to use again especially in a different way |
| stewardship | the act of taking care of something |
| waste management | the utilization of proper techniques to disposal of waste |
