| excavation site | an area where excavating has been done or is in progress |
| sedimentary rock | forms when sediments are compacted and cemented together or when minerals form from solutions |
| paleontology | the branch of science concerned with fossil animals and plants |
| amber | Fossilized tree sap. |
| fossil | The remains, imprints, or traces of prehistoric organisms |
| cast | A mold filled with sediment and hardened to create a replica of the original fossil. |
| mold | An impression made in sediments by the hard parts of an organism. |
| permineralization | Fossilization in which minerals in water deposit into empty spaces in an organism. |
| index fossil | Remains of species that existed on Earth for a relatively short period of time, were abundant, and were widespread geographically |
| principle of superposition | in undisturbed layers of rock, the oldest rocks are on the bottom and get younger towards the top |
| relative age | determining the age of something in comparison to the age of other things |
| unconformity | gaps in rock layers that can develop when erosion occurs |
