| Legislative Branch | Branch of the government that creates laws |
| Impeachment | A process where the Judicial Branch formally gives charges against a high official in the government |
| Appropriations | It is the act of setting something apart for its application to a particular usage |
| Speaker of the House | The presiding officer of the House of Representatives |
| Bicameral | It divides the legislators into two separate assemblies, or houses. |
| Vice President | A deputy for the president |
| Standing committee | Permanent Legislative panels put together by the legislative branch |
| Majority party | A condition where two major parties dominate a political party |
| Redistricting | Dividing an area into new political districts |
| Re-apportionment | Redistribution of representation in a legislative body |
| President Pro Tempore | A senator presides over the US Senate in the absence of the vice president. |
| Filibuster | Something that stops progress in a legislative assembly while not technically violating the required procedures. |
| Constituents | A member of a constituency |
| Census | An official count of a population, typically recording various details of people |
| Conference committee | A committee of the Congress appointed by the Congress to solve disagreements on a bill |
| Joint session | The gathering of the two members of the Congress |
| Implied powers | Powers not explicitly named in the Constitution, but necessary to implement the expressed powers |
| Minority party | A political party with so little electoral strength, its chance of doing much in the government is small. |
| Lobbyist | Someone who takes part in an attempt to influence legislators |
| Checks and balances | Limits imposed on all branches of the government, by using each of the branches to watch and keep in check each other. |
| Interest groups | A group that tries to influence the government to allow certain policies |
| Cloture | A process or procedure for ending a debate, and taking a vote |
| Bill | A form of a proposed statute presented to a legislature |
| Expulsion | The most serious disciplinary action that can be taken against a high official of government. |
