QuestionAnswer
What sphere has lakes, rivers, and oceans? hydrosphere
What sphere has air? atmosphere
What sphere has rocks and mountains? geosphere
What sphere has all of the living things? biosphere
List 3 of the main layers of our planet starting from the outside layer and working towards the center. crust, mantle, core
What is main type of gas that is found in our atmosphere? nitrogen
What percent of our air is oxygen? 21%
How does sedimentary rock form? Sand and other materials are deposited over time.
How does igneous rock form? It is made when molten materials found in a volcano cool off.
How does metamorphic rock form? These rocks start as one type of rock and then are exposed to high heat or pressure that makes them change to another type of rock.
Besides location, how can we tell the crust, mantle, and core apart? Their chemical compositions. Different layers are made up of different minerals and elements.
How do scientists classify the 5 layers of Earth (lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core? Physical properties (the properties we can observe)
Which layer is where the Earth's tectonic plates move? The second one down, the asthenosphere
Which layer of Earth is the thinnest layer? The crust
What happens to the density of Earth's layers as you go from the crust to the core? The density increases as you move towards the core (Think about all of the matter on the outside of Earth pushing down on the core. That is a lot of gravitational force so the core is very smooshed together!)
We can't drill through the layers of Earth. How have scientists learned about Earth's layers without ever seeing them? The use data from seismic waves. They watch how the waves travel after an earthquake.
