Continental Drift The gradual movement of the continents across the earth's surface through geological time.
Convection Currents A current in a fluid that results from convection.
Convergent boundary A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving toward each other.
Core The central or innermost portion of the Earth.
Crust The outer layer of the Earth
Density The degree of compactness of a substance.

Boundary A line that marks the limits of an area.
Earthquake A sudden and violent shaking of the ground.
Fault A crack in the Earth's crust.
Fold Bend over on itself so that one part of it covers another.
Geothermal Energy Heat energy generated and stored in the Earth.
Hot Spots Volcanic regions thought to be fed by underlying mantle.
Lithosphere The rigid outer part of the Earth.
Lithospheric Plates Regions of Earth's crust and upper mantle that are fractured into plates.
Magma Hot fluid below or within the earth's crust from which lava and other igneous rock is formed by cooling.
Mantle The region of the earth's interior between the crust and the core.
Mid-Ocean Ridges A long seismically active submarine ridge system situated in the middle of an ocean basin and marking the site of the up welling of magma associated with seafloor spreading.
Oceanic Crust The relatively thin part of the earth's crust that underlies the ocean basins.
Pangea A super continent that included all current land masses.
Plate Tectonics A theory explaining the structure of the Earth's crust.
Radioactive Decay The spontaneous transformation of an unstable atomic nucleus into a lighter one.
Seafloor Spreading The formation of new areas of oceanic crust.
Subduction The sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate of the earth's crust into the mantle beneath another plate.
Temperature The degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
