| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photosynthesis | A process in which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food energy (sugar), oxygen, and water |
| Cellular Respiration | The process by which the chemical energy of "food" molecuels is released and changed into ATP (energy) |
| Chloroplasts | An elongated cell organelle containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place |
| Chlorophyll | A green molecule which uses light energy from sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide gas into sugar and oxygen |
| Glucose | The sugar or food that the plants make for themselves |
| Mitochondria | Rod-shaped organelles with a double membrane which converts stored in glucose into ATP (energy) for the cell |
| Photosynthesis Equation | H2O+CO2+Light=O2+C6H12O6 [Water+Carbon Dioxide+Light=Oxygen+Glucose (Sugar)] |
| Respiration Equation | O2+C6H12O6=H2O+CO2+ATP [Oxygen+Glucose (Sugar)=Water+Carbon Dioxide+energy] |
| Diffusion | The movement of molecules from a dense area to a less dense area (no energy used) |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane |
| Active Transport | The movement of materials between a cell membrane (uses energy) |
| Carbon Dioxide | a colorless, odorless gas produced by respiration and is absorbed by plants in photosynthesis. |
