cartographer | a scientist who studies and makes maps |
constraint | a limitation or restriction; a rule that you cannot break or something that you cannot do while solving an engineering problem |
continent | one of the seven great landmasses of the Earth; includes Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America |
criteria | a standard of judgement; a rule for evaluating or testing something |
dynamic | describes a system that is always changing, even though the changes might be happening slowly |
Earth | the planet we live on |
earthquake | a shaking of Earth’s crust caused by rock slabs moving against each other deep below Earth’s crust |
engineer | someone who designs solutions to problems |
erosion | the movement of weathered materials by water, wind or ice |
fossil | the remains or traces of an organism that lived long ago |
geologic time | the very large period of time that describes the entire history of Earth |
geologist | a scientist who studies Earth’s structure, composition, forces, history and future |
glacier | a large body of moving ice that stays frozen all year |
landform | a natural structure on Earth’s surface |
legend | an explanation of symbols used on a map; also called a key |
map | a picture of all or part of the Earth’s surface |
mountain range | a large, natural elevation of the earth’s surface rising abruptly form the surrounding level land; generally steeper than a hill |
paleontologist | scientist who studies fossils |
Pangaea | a continent that existed millions of years ago and was made of all of today’s separate continents joined together |
plate | a huge piece of Earths’ crust that moves very slowly |
rock | a solid mixture of minerals that was formed in Earth’s crust |
soil | a material made of tiny pieces of rock, minerals, and decayed plant and animal matter (humus) |
stream | a small, narrow river |
topographic map | a map that shows the shape and elevation of the land surface using contour lines, and shows other land features using symbols and colors |
volcano | a mountain built up from hardened lava, rocks, and ash that erupted out of the Earth |
weathering | the breaking down and wearing away of rock |
