planet planet, or in Greek wanderer a large object that revolves around the sun
ellispe An ellipse is a curve that is the locus of all points in the plane the sum. the shape of a planets orbit
focus the center of interest in an ellispe. for the planets, the sun
perihelion when, in the planets orbit, the planet is closest to the sun
aphelion when, in the planets orbit, the planet is farthest away from the sun
astronomical units (ua) the unit used to measure how far away form the sun an object is
albedo the ability of a planet to reflect light
mass the amount of matter an object (planet) contains.
weight how much you weigh
surface gravity the downward pull the planet exerts on objects at its surface
inferior planet planets closest to the sun orbits faster ( Mercury, Venus)
phase like the phases of the moon
transit when a planet passes between the sun and earth and all you see is a dark silhouette against the sun
superior planets planets farthest away from the sun, also orbit more slowly. ( Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)
retrograde motion when the earth passes a superior planet and the planet appears to move backwards
terrestrial planet planets that are the earths size or smaller
Jovian planets larger than the earth
gas giant plants that are very gaseous
Great red spot reddish-colored, rotating ,oval shaped disk on Jupiter
Cassini's Division area that appear empty from on earth put actually have many tiny rings
occult to hide or eclipse, to hide in front of
