Final Weather Test vocab
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Why is there wind? | Air is heated unevenly (warm air at equator and cold air at poles) |
What is convection? | The movement of air OR water (WARM air/water rises and COLD air/water sinks) |
How does air typically move across the US? | WEST to EAST (prevailing westerlies) |
What impacts wind the greatest? | The amount of air pressure in the area. |
What causes air masses to change their direction? | The jet stream may deflect air masses from moving west to east. |
What is the jet stream? | A fast flowing, river of air, found in the upper troposphere, which forms a boundary between air masses with significant differences in temperature. It pushes air masses around the world. |
At the beach, what direction is the wind blowing during the day? | Winds typically blow from the ocean toward the land (sea breeze). |
At the beach, what direction is the wind blowing during the night? | Winds typically blow from the land toward the ocean (land breeze). |
Why do winds change directions from day to night by areas near a water source? | The temperature of the land and water changes. |
Which changes temperatures more quickly- land or ocean? | The land changes temperature more quickly than water. |
Describe weather conditions for an area with low pressure? | The weather would probably be windy, have precipitation, and be cloudy. |
Describe the weather when high pressure and low pressure meet. | Precipitation would probably occur. |
What is a cirrus cloud? | A cloud that forms high in the atmosphere, made of ice crystals, and signals a change of weather is on the way. |
What is a cumulus cloud? | A fair-weather cloud that rises from a flat base. |
What is a stratus cloud? | A low cloud (fog), brings light precipitation, and covers the sky like a blanket. |
What is a cumulonimbus cloud? | Often called a thunderhead cloud, it brings heavy precipitation and is often several miles tall. |
What are the opposite seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall? | Summer, fall, winter, and spring. |
Why are there higher rates of precipitation in areas near the equator? | Due to the equator receiving more direct sunlight, these areas have higher temperatures than those at the poles. Higher temperatures result in more evaporation, which leads to more precipitation. |
What is the Gulf Stream? | A warm ocean current off eastern US. It originates in the Gulf of Mexico and then flows northward along the east coast of the United States. |
How does the Gulf Stream impact temperatures in NC? | The warm ocean water warms the surrounding land. |
What weather conditions need to occur for a tornado to form? | Cold air from Canada collides with warm air from the Gulf of Mexico...creating perfect conditions for a tornado. |
Does El Nino or La Nina bring less precipitation to an area? | La Nina |
This causes ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean to be unseasonably colder than normal. | La Nina |
This causes ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean to be unseasonably warmer than normal; causing more storms and flooding. | El Nino |
Which type of front brings heavy precipitation and moves through an area very quickly? | A cold front |
Which type of front brings light, steady precipitation and moves through an area slowly? | A warm front |
