Mixture 2 or more things that are together but not chemically combined
Two special kinds of mixtures Suspension & solution
Suspension Mixture of water and non-dissolved materials that do not settle out (blood)
Solution Mixture where two materials are dissolved and uniformly mixed
Solute Dissolved material
Solvent Material that does dissolving
Acid Something that produced hydrogen ions
Base Something that produces hydroxide ions
Neutralization reaction When an acid and base are mixed together
Buffer Weak acid or base that can react with strong acids or bases to prevent a sudden change in pH
pH scale is a Log scale ( each step represents 10 )
Acidic pH Less than 7
Basic pH Higher than 7
Metabolism Chemical reaction that accurate in an organism. Chemical reactions involve changes in chemical bonds that join atoms in compounds
Exothermic Chemical reactions that release energy
Endothermic Chemical reactions that absorb energy
Enzymes Organic molecules (protein) that speeds up rate of reaction without being changed by it
Substrate Molecule being affected by the enzyme
Active site Where the substrate binds to the enzyme
Polar molecule
Enzyme inhibitors Molecules that act as an enzyme imposter, and plugs up the active site
Cohesion Strong attraction of molecules of the same substance
Adhesion Attraction of molecules of different substance
