Biology Unit 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mixture | 2 or more things that are together but not chemically combined |
| Two special kinds of mixtures | Suspension & solution |
| Suspension | Mixture of water and non-dissolved materials that do not settle out (blood) |
| Solution | Mixture where two materials are dissolved and uniformly mixed |
| Solute | Dissolved material |
| Solvent | Material that does dissolving |
| Acid | Something that produced hydrogen ions |
| Base | Something that produces hydroxide ions |
| Neutralization reaction | When an acid and base are mixed together |
| Buffer | Weak acid or base that can react with strong acids or bases to prevent a sudden change in pH |
| pH scale is a | Log scale ( each step represents 10 ) |
| Acidic pH | Less than 7 |
| Basic pH | Higher than 7 |
| Metabolism | Chemical reaction that accurate in an organism. Chemical reactions involve changes in chemical bonds that join atoms in compounds |
| Exothermic | Chemical reactions that release energy |
| Endothermic | Chemical reactions that absorb energy |
| Enzymes | Organic molecules (protein) that speeds up rate of reaction without being changed by it |
| Substrate | Molecule being affected by the enzyme |
| Active site | Where the substrate binds to the enzyme |
| Polar molecule | |
| Enzyme inhibitors | Molecules that act as an enzyme imposter, and plugs up the active site |
| Cohesion | Strong attraction of molecules of the same substance |
| Adhesion | Attraction of molecules of different substance |
