Biology Unit 2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Mixture | 2 or more things that are together but not chemically combined |
Two special kinds of mixtures | Suspension & solution |
Suspension | Mixture of water and non-dissolved materials that do not settle out (blood) |
Solution | Mixture where two materials are dissolved and uniformly mixed |
Solute | Dissolved material |
Solvent | Material that does dissolving |
Acid | Something that produced hydrogen ions |
Base | Something that produces hydroxide ions |
Neutralization reaction | When an acid and base are mixed together |
Buffer | Weak acid or base that can react with strong acids or bases to prevent a sudden change in pH |
pH scale is a | Log scale ( each step represents 10 ) |
Acidic pH | Less than 7 |
Basic pH | Higher than 7 |
Metabolism | Chemical reaction that accurate in an organism. Chemical reactions involve changes in chemical bonds that join atoms in compounds |
Exothermic | Chemical reactions that release energy |
Endothermic | Chemical reactions that absorb energy |
Enzymes | Organic molecules (protein) that speeds up rate of reaction without being changed by it |
Substrate | Molecule being affected by the enzyme |
Active site | Where the substrate binds to the enzyme |
Polar molecule | |
Enzyme inhibitors | Molecules that act as an enzyme imposter, and plugs up the active site |
Cohesion | Strong attraction of molecules of the same substance |
Adhesion | Attraction of molecules of different substance |
