Nature of Matter

QuestionAnswer
Atoms make up what? Matter
What are atoms made up of? a.) electrons b.) protons c.) neutrons
What is/are electrons? Found outside the nucleus- have negative charge
What is/are protons? Found in nucleus- have positive charge
What is/are neutrons? Found in nucleus- have no charge
What is an element(s)? Made up of one type of atom- organized in periodic table
What is/are a molecule(s)? Atoms of the same element bonded together i.e) O2
What is/are compounds? Made up of two or more different elements that combine chemically i.e) H2O- water; CO2; CO
What is a mixture? Made of substances that combine physically-can be solids, liquids or gases or combinations of both- i.e) sand and baking soda; chocolate chip ice cream
What are the parts of “Nature of Matter” ? Atoms, element, molecules, compounds, mixture, solutions, and suspensions
What are the types of mixtures? Solutions, suspensions
What are solutions? Two or more substances are mixed evenly a.) sweat- salt and water (saline solution)
What are suspensions? Gas or liquid has another substance evenly spread throughout it; a.) unlike solutions, substances can sink to the bottom b.) Blood- red, white blood cells and platelets c.) oil & H2O; fine sand and H2O
Blood stays together in the body because...? Heart keeps blood flowing and blood cells suspended
What are inorganic compounds? Made from elements other than carbon i.e) water (H2O) is an inorganic compound
What is the importance of water? a.) living things are made up of more than 50% water b.) needed for chemical reactions to occur c.) used to transport materials through organisms
What are organic compounds? Contain carbon; associated with living or once living things
What are carbohydrates? Supply energy for cell process -sugar (like glucose) -starches break down into simple sugars
What are lipids? 1.) fats and oils do not mix with water 2.) release a larger amount of energy than carbohydrates; harder to break down 3.) found in cell membranes; make cell membrane selectively permeable b/c fats & oils don’t mix w water
What are proteins? 1.) made up of amino acids 2.) make up many structures like muscle 3.) make up enzymes
What are enzymes? Regulate all chemical reactions in cell; can sped up the rate of a reaction
What are nucleic acids? 1) these store coded information for cells in DNA
What is DNA? deoxyribonucleic acid- directs activity of the cell
What are the parts of organic compounds? Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
