Cell Organelles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mitochondria | organelles that are the sites of cellular respiration; 'powerhouse' of the cell |
| prokaryote | A unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus and membrane bound organelles |
| eukaryote | A cell that contains a nucleus and membrane bound organelles |
| cell wall | A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell |
| cell membrane | A thin, flexible barrier around a cell; regulates what enters and leaves the cell |
| cytoplasm | A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended |
| nucleus | A part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and reproduction |
| nucleolus | a region of the nucleus where ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is produced; where ribosomes are made |
| central vacuole | a membrane-bound compartment in a plant cell that helps regulate the water content of the cell, store waste material, and support the cell through internal pressure |
| ribosomes | small organelles, made of RNA and protein; sites of protein synthesis |
| endoplasmic reticulum | a network of membranes in a eukaryotic cell (smooth ER without ribosomes attached), some with ribosomes attached (rough ER), that is interconnected with the outer nuclear membrane |
| Gogli body (apparatus) | a membranous organelle of a eukaryotic cell, which manufactures or modifies, packages, sorts, and transports molecules of the cell |
| lysosomes | membrane-bound organelles, usually spherical, that contain enzymes to break down molecules in eukaryotic cells |
| chloroplast | An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs |
