Plate Tectoonics

TermDefinition
Continental Drift The hypothesis that states that the contins once formed a single landmass, broke up, and drifted to their prese locations
Pangaea A huge continent.
Sea-Floor Spreading The process by which new oceanic lithosphere forms as magma rises toward the surface and solidifies.
Plate Tectonics The theory that explains how large pieces of the Earth’s outermost layer, called tectonic plates, move and change shapes.

Hot spot Are volcanically active places on the Earth’s surface that are far from plate boundaries.
Mid-ocean ridges A long, undersea mountain chain that forms along the floor of the major oceans.
Subduction The sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate of the earth's crust into the mantle beneath another plate.
Vent An opening at the surface of the Earth through which volcanic material passes.
