Soil formation

TermDefinition
Soil A loose mixture of rock fragments ,organic material ,water ,and air that can support the growth of vegetation.
Parent rock and bed rock The rock formation that is the soure of minerl fragments in the soil is called parent rock and brd rock is thr layers of rock beneath the soil.
Residual soil The soil that remains above its parents rock is called residual soil and soil that is blown washed away or moved by glaciers are called transported soil
Transported soil Washed away,or moved by by glaciers
Soil composition Soil is a mixture of rock particles,minerals,decayed organic material,water,and air
Humus A dark colored substance that forms as plant and animal remains decay
Decomposition During decomposition organisms that live in soil turn dead organic material into humus
Nutrients Plants need nutrients to grow the soil provides the nutrients to make plants live
Fertile soil Fertile soil is rich in the nutrients that plants need to grow
Soil texture Soil texture is the soil quality that is based on the proportions of soil particles
Loam
It has a crumbly texture that holds both air and water
Infiltration The ability to move through soil
Soil structure The arrangement of soil particles
Soil horizons Soil is consistently being formed whenever bedrock is exposed and this process of soil formation continues over a long period of time
Horizon A
A crumbly dark brown soil that is a mixture of humus clay and other minerals.
Horizon B Usually consists of clay and other particles washed down from the Horizon A but little humus.
Horizon C Contains solid to partly weathered rock.
Leaching Leaching or the removal of substances that can be dissolved from rock of soil due to the passing of water.
Soil mixtures Earthworms and burrowing animals suck as mice moles prairie dogs and gophers break up hard compacted soil and mix humus through it.
