Science ( fossils )

Question Answer
Fossil The preserved remains or traces of living things.
Sedimentary Rock The type of rock where fossils are found.
Sediment Pieces of rock.
Mold A type of fossil ; a hollow area that takes the shape of an organism.
Cast A type of fossil; a solid copy of the shape of an organism ( the opposite of a mold )
Petrified fossil A type of fossil; fossils in which minerals replace all or part of an organism.
Carbon films A type of fossil; a very thin coating of carbon on rock (the carbon from an organism).
Trace fossils A type of fossil: a footprint or "trace" of an organism
Preserved remains A type of fossil; preserved remains of organisms
Paleontologist A scientist who studies fossils
Fossil Record Provides evidence about the history of life and past environments on Earth.
Evolution The gradual change in living things over long periods of time.
Extinct An organism that no longer exists.
Scientific Theory A well tested concept that explains a wide range of observations.
