| ecosystem | all the living and nonliving things in nature |
| system | two or more parts working together that won't work if one part is removed |
| interdependent | depending upon one another to survive. Each item needs the other one. |
| abiotic | not living things such as wind, sun, etc. |
| biotic | living items |
| limiting factors | things in nature that limit the size of a population, such as food resources |
| habitat | where an animal lives in an ecosystem |
| niche | the job or role an organism plays |
| photosynthesis | process where plants use sunlight to produce energy |
| biosphere | part of Earth that supports life |
| producers | organisms that create their own energy from sun photosynthesis |
| consumers | organisms that get energy by eating other organisms |
| herbivores | eater of plants |
| carnivores | eater of meat |
| omnivores | eater of everything |
| decomposers | break down dead and decaying |
| food chain | shows how energy flows not what eats what |
| organism | any living thing |
| population | all the number of species living in an area at the same time |
| community | includes all the populations of living things in the system that interact |
