ecosystem all the living and nonliving things in nature
system two or more parts working together that won't work if one part is removed
interdependent depending upon one another to survive. Each item needs the other one.
abiotic not living things such as wind, sun, etc.
biotic living items
limiting factors things in nature that limit the size of a population, such as food resources
habitat where an animal lives in an ecosystem
niche the job or role an organism plays
photosynthesis process where plants use sunlight to produce energy
biosphere part of Earth that supports life
producers organisms that create their own energy from sun photosynthesis
consumers organisms that get energy by eating other organisms
herbivores eater of plants
carnivores eater of meat
omnivores eater of everything
decomposers break down dead and decaying
food chain shows how energy flows not what eats what
organism any living thing
population all the number of species living in an area at the same time
community includes all the populations of living things in the system that interact
