Biology Chapter 1 Qs

Study Guide Q's for Chapter 1

QuestionAnswer
Metabolism The sum total of all processes in an organism which converts energy and matter from outside sources and use that energy to sustain the organisms life functions
Anabolism The sum total of all processes in an organism which use energy and simple chemical building blocks to produce large chemicals and sructure necessary for life
Catabolism The sum total of all processes in an organism which break down chemicals to produce energy and simple chemical building blocks
Photosythesis The process by which green plants and some other organisms use the engery of sunlight and simple chemicals to produce food
Herbivores Organisms that only eat plants
Carnivores Organisms that only eat organisms other then plants
Omnivores Organisms that eat both plants and other organisms
Producers Organisms that produce their own food
Consumers Organisms that eat living producers and/or other consumers for food
Decomposers Organisms that break down dead remains of other organisms
Autotrophs Organisms that are able to make their own food
Heterotrohps Organisms that depend on other organisms for their food
Receptors Special structures that allow living things to sense the condition of their internal or extrenal enviornment
Asexual Reproduction Reprodutcion accomplished by a single organism
Sexual Reproduction Reprouction that requires two organisms
Inheritance The process by which physical and biological characteristics are transmitted from the parent(s) to the offspring
Mutation An abrubt and marked change in DNA
Hypothesis An educated guess that attemps to explain and observation or answer a question
Theory A hypothesis that had been tested with a significant ammount of data
Scientific Law A theory that had been tested by and is consistant with generations of data
Micro-organisms Living creatues that are too small to see with the naked eye
Abiogenesis The idea that long ago very simple life forms spontaneously appeared through chemical reactions
Prokaryotic Cell A cell that has no distinct membrane-bounded organelles
Eukrayotic Cell A cell with distict membrane-bounded organelles
Species A unit of one or more populations of indivduals tht can reproduce under normal condiions, produce fertile offspring and are reproductivly isolated from
Taxonomy The science of classifying organisms
Binomial Nomenclature Naming an organism with its genus and speices name
What are the four criteris for life? 1) Can reporduce 2) All life forms have a method by which they extract energy from the surroundings and convert it into energy that sustains them 3) All life forms can sense changes in their surroudings and respond ot those changes 4) Contains DNA
An organ is classified as a carnivoreIs it a heterotroph or and autotroph? Heterotroph
Is an organ and producer, consumer, or decomposer? Consumer
An organism has receptors on tentacles that come out of its head. If those tentacles were cut off in and accidenet, what life function would be most hampered? Touch "Sense"
A parent and two offspring are studied. Althoguh there are many similarites between the parent and the offspring, there are also some differances. Do these organisms reproduce sexually or asexually? Sexually
What is wrong with the following statement? "Science has proven that energy must always be conserved?" Science can't prove anything
Briefly explain the Scientific Method It starts with Observation, then they form an hypothesis form the info gathered. Then the hpothesis is tested. After continuous testing/results it becomes a theory. After several generations of consistent data is becomes a scientific law
Why does the story of spontaneous generation illustrate the limitation of science? B.c thye believed in something that was wrong for 200 years. So you cant put to much faith in science.
Where does the wise person place their faith: Science or the Bible? The Bible
Why is the theory of abiogenesis just another exapmle of the idea of spontaneous generation? Because it is the idea that long ago, very simple life formes spontaneously appeared through chemical reaction
Name the classidication groups in out heirarchial classification scheme in order. 1)Kingdom 2)Phylum 3)Class 4)Order 5)Family 6)Genus 7)Species
An organism is a muticellular consuker made of eukaryoitc cells. To what kingdom does it belong? Animalia
If you were using the three domain system of classification, in which domain would the organism in Q #12 belong? Eukarya
An orgainsim is a single-celled comsumer made of prokaryotic cells. To what kingdom does it belong? Monera
If you were using the three-domain system of classification, could you deterone the domain of the organism in #14? If so, give the domain. If not, give the possible domains in which it could be placed. It could go into either Archaea or Bacteria depending on where it is.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
