Basic parts of speech,Figurative Language, Types of Writing, Story Elements

QuestionAnswer
What is a noun? a person, place, or thing.
What is a verb? describes an action; something that you can do.
What is an adverb? describes HOW the action is performed.
What is an adjective? a word that describes a noun or pronoun.
What is a conjunction? a word that joins words or word groups together.
What is a preposition? a word that shows position or, direction.
What is an interjection? a word that shows strong emotion.
Literal language is... saying exactly what you mean; making no comparison- No exaggerating or understating the situation.
Figurative language is... when you DON’T say exactly what you mean. You DO compare, exaggerate, and understate the situation.
What is a pronoun? a word that takes the place of a noun.
Similie comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”.
Hyperbole an exaggeration so dramatic, no one could believe it; overstate to emphasize a point.
Alliteration the repeating of the same letter or sound, especially consonant sounds….including tongue twisters.
Metaphor comparing two unlike things without using like or as. Calling one thing, another. Saying one thing is something else.
Personification giving human characteristics to things that are not human.
Onomatopoeia the use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound made by an object or action.
Oxymoron words or phrases in which contradictory or opposite terms are used together
What is the purpose of Narrative writing? To entertain
What is the purpose of Descriptive writing? To inform
What is the purpose of Expository writing? To show
What is the purpose of Persuasive writing? To persuade
How many Elements of a Short Story were covered in this unit? Five
Which Element is missing? Plot, Conflict, Characters, Setting Theme
What is the basic definition of a plot? the storyline
Name two important parts of the setting. Time and Place
The main character or hero in the short story is the protagonist and the "bad guy" in the story is called the Antagonist
Static characters stay the same
Dynamic characters change as the story goes along
What is missing? Rising action, Falling action, Resolution, Climax Exposition
The Exposition is the Beginning of the Story
The Climax is the Middle of Story
The Rising Action is/are the event or events that lead to the climax; presents some type of conflict
With the Falling Action All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.
The Resolution is when The story comes to a reasonable ending.
