Unit 1A Exam

QuestionAnswer
Name two common ways that scientists communicate the results of their experiments with other scientists. Publish in Scientific Journals. Speak at Scientific conferences.
Why is it important that Scientists communicate the results of their experiments? So that other scientists can try the experiment to get the same result.
What is Science? Science is the study of the natural world.
What is technology? Technology is how we change the natural world to meet our needs.
In which situations would scientists want to use a model for their research? When their subject is: 1. Too big to fit in the lab. 2. Too small to be seen. 3. A potentially COSTLY project.
A 'system' has input', 'process,' and 'output.' The 'output' is what you want to get from the system. Say for example a squirtgun, What is the input, the process and the output? The input is the water, the process is the pump action of the trigger, and the output is the spray of water that comes out.
If you wanted to measure the length of your pencil, what SI unit of measure would you use? Centimeter
If you wanted to measure the length of your room, what SI unit of measure would you use? Meter
What does it mean when someone has a 'bias.' Someone has a personal opinion that will affect the way he interprets events or information.
What is one way to keep yourself safe when setting up your scientific experiment. Good preparation includes taking proper safety precautions when setting up your experiment
What is 'precise' in scientific experimentation? Precise means that all measurements or data are very similar or close together.
What is 'accurate' in scientific experimentation? Accurate means that measurements or data are close to the true or actual value.
What is the definition of Science? Science is the study of the natural world
What is the definition of technology? Technology is the way that we change the natural world to improve the quality of people's lives.
What are the basic steps of the scientific method? 1. Identify a problem. 2. Make a hypothesis. 3 Test your hypothesis and make observations. 4. Make conclusions.
Scientists should always report ALL results truthfully and include ALL data points on graphs. Why would it be a problem if they did not? If a scientist hides data then his results are misleading and probably wrong.
Why do scientific theories include explanations while scientific laws do not? Scientific laws are well tested and well known among all scientists whereas scientific theories may be newer and not as well known among scientists.
Why do scientists communicate the results of their experiments at conferences or in scientific journals? So that other scientists can try the same experiment to see if they can get the same results.
