Plate Tectonics

TermDefinition
Continental Plate Rocky material that makes up continents; less dense and contains a greater amount of lighter-colored minerals than the oceanic crust
Convergent Boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates moving toward each other
Divergent Boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates moving away from each other; on land creates rift valleys, on the sea floor created new ocean crust
Earthquakes Major geological events that occur when plates shift suddenly and release stored energy; a frequent occurrence at transform boundaries
Geological A science that deals with the history of the earth and its life especially as recorded in rocks
Mountain Building Major geological event that occurs when continental plates equal density converge
Ocean Basins Movement of plates create dense oceanic crust that sinks lower in the asthenosphere than the less dense continental crust, resulting in depressions on Earth's surface that fill with water
Oceanic Plate Portion of Earth’s outer crust that lies beneath the oceans; thin and dense
Plate Tectonics Huge pieces of lithosphere that slowly move on the asthenosphere, and consist of the crust and the rigid, uppermost part of the mantle
Sea-floor Spreading A parallel pattern of rock material found at identical locations on each side of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge reveals rock of the same geologic age and polarity
Subduction Occurs when one plate is denser than another and is forced below as the two plated converge at their boundary
Transform Boundary The boundary between two plates that slide pass one another; sudden shifts result in major geological events such as earthquakes and the release of stored energy
Volcanic Eruptions Major geological events that occur when a dense plate subducts below a less dense plate as they converge

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
