etiology the cause or reason for something.
heterogeneous group a group consisting of members who are unrelated; have nothing in common.
stochastic involving or containing a random variable. involving chance or probability.
verb inflection an ending on a verb signalizing paste or tense forms. such as ed, ing, etc.
specific language impairement a condition in which only the language skills lag behind, nonverbal is still normal. no known cause such as ear infection or medical reason for it.
chromosome DNA containing linear body in the cell nucleus. Consists of sequences of 4 amino acid base pairs. Each contains many genes, separated by what they used to call “junk DNA” (that may actually be important for the expression* of some genes).
gene functional hereditary unit that occupies specific location on chromosome, and has specific influence on phenotype*, & is subject mutation resulting in various allelic* forms. determines particular characteristic in an organism. small part of chromosome.
allele a variation in a gene, a mutation of a gene.
monozygotic a pair of twins who came from the same zygote, identical twins.
dizygotic a pair of twins who came from two separate eggs; fraternal twins.
genotype the genetic endowment of an organism. includes things that arent visible.
phenotype Environmentally & genetically determined, observable physical/behavioral appearance. Physical/behavioral symptom set associated with a particular genotype. OR appearance/behavior of organism associated with particular combination of environment & genotype
epigenesis the approximately stepwise process by which genetic information, as modified by environmental influences, is translated into the substance and behavior of an organism.
probands a patient who is the initial member of a family to come into a study.
assortative mating like seeks like! :D
Endophenotype a particular, very specific behavioral trait (here, poor nonword repetition) that is heritable
idiopathic no known cause.
