The Universe

TermDefinition
astronomical unit (AU) the distance between Earth and the Sun. AU is 150,000,000 km.
asteroids A rock in space.
comets An object consisting of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun.
jovian the largest planets are mostly made of gas.
terrestrial “small” planets made of rock and metal.
light year a unit of distance, is the distance the light travels in a year. Used to measure between star systems, 9,500,000,000,000 km per year.
scientific notation the way that scientists easily handle very large numbers or very small numbers.
universe a vast span where there are billions of galaxies, each with billions of star systems like ours.
galaxy Over 100 billion star systems grouped together in a large celestial system.
star system Asteroids and planets held by gravity in orbit around a Star
astronomy the study of space
