| Term | Definition |

| astronomical unit (AU) | the distance between Earth and the Sun. AU is 150,000,000 km. |
| asteroids | A rock in space. |
| comets | An object consisting of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun. |
| jovian | the largest planets are mostly made of gas. |
| terrestrial | “small” planets made of rock and metal. |
| light year | a unit of distance, is the distance the light travels in a year. Used to measure between star systems, 9,500,000,000,000 km per year. |
| scientific notation | the way that scientists easily handle very large numbers or very small numbers. |
| universe | a vast span where there are billions of galaxies, each with billions of star systems like ours. |
| galaxy | Over 100 billion star systems grouped together in a large celestial system. |
| star system | Asteroids and planets held by gravity in orbit around a Star |
| astronomy | the study of space |
