Natural Resources

QuestionAnswer
How do renewable and nonrenewable resources compare? A renewable resource is constantly being supplied while a nonrenewable resource is used up faster than it can be replaced
What is the relationship between oil, coal, and natural gas? They are the three types of fossil fuels (nonrenewable resources because of the long time they take to form)
What determines the best alternative energy resource to use? If the resource is most available
What energy source supplies solar power and hydroelectric power? Sunlight
What are the advantages of using windmills, solar panels, hydroelectric dams, and geothermal power plants? They provide renewable energy
Which energy source is obtained from heat underground? Geothermal energy is obtained from underground usually as steam
What is biomass energy? Organic material, like burning wood to produce heat or fuel
Which fossil fuel produces the greatest amount of electricity in the U.S.? Coal is the greatest source of energy for electricity
How does energy from the power wind and hydroelectric power? The sun drives the water cycle and can cause the uneven heating of the air creating wind
What is the difference between geothermal energy and fossil fuels? Geothermal energy is renewable and fossil fuels, such as oil, are nonrenewable
Why is water a renewable resource? Water is RENEWABLE because it can be replaced through the water cycle
How are dams used to generate energy? Dams use hydroelectric energy
What are some limitations for solar energy? It should be sunny to use solar energy-rainy & cloudy weather would not be good conditions for solar energy
How can people conserve water at home? Repair leaks, Turn off water while brushing teeth, Take shorter showers
What are some methods for conserving soil? Planting trees, Crop Rotation, Terracing, No-till farming conserve soil
How does farming and planting trees help our soil as a natural resource? Farming and planting trees sustain soil by keeping it renewable
Why are fossil fuels not a reliable resource for the future? Fossil fuels are nonrenewable because once they are used, it takes too long to form again and replace
How does the use of plastic affect the availability of petroleum? Plastic is made from petroleum so the availability of petroleum will be reduced when plastics are made and used
What is global warming? The gradual increase of Earth's temperature from too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
How has human activity contributed to global warming? Humans use a lot of fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, steadily increasing Earth's global temperatures
What is a major contributor to the production of greenhouse gases ? Driving cars increases greenhouse gases which causes global warming
Why has there been a rise in global temperatures over the years? Temperatures are increasing because of more CO2 from burning fossil fuels
How has global warming caused a rise in sea levels? An increase in greenhouse gases contributes to global warming that creates a rise in temperature and causes a rise in sea levels
How doe hybrid cars reduce air pollution and slow down global warming? Hybrid cars do not burn as much gasoline, polluting the air since they use part electric engines

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
