Science The systematic study of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment
Hypothesis A possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question; must be testable
Pseudoscience
Evaluation/Analysis Involves comparing observations and data to reach a conclusion
Data Facts, figures and other evidence gathered through observations
Conclusion A summary of what has been learned from an experiment
Metric System A system of measurement based on the number 10
Model A representation of a complex object or process, used to help people understand a concept that they cannot observe directly
Quantitative Deals with numbers or amounts
Observation Using one or more of your senses to gather information
Qualitative Deals with descriptions or data that cannot be expressed in numbers
Variable Characteristic/factor that can affect the result of an experiment
Independent Variable Variable that is manipulated (controlled/changed) by the researcher; purposely changed to test the hypothesis
Dependent Variable Variable that may change in response to the independent variable
Control Group A sample that is treated exactly like the other experimental groups except that the variable is not applied to it
