Unit 1A L4 Quiz

Quiz - Unit 1A Lesson 4

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between a 'Law' and a 'Theory'? Scientific theories provide explanations of experimental results. For example, after 20 years of studying body tissues under the microscope, they theorized that all living things are made of cells. While scientific laws simply describe observed patterns
What are 'Variables?' The factors that are changed during a scientific experiment.
What are the three types of variables? Manipulated (independent), Responding (dependent), and Controlled (left alone)
Which is the 'Manipulated Variable' in a scientific experiment? The variable that the scientist changes during the experiment to see how the dependent variable "responds".
Which is the 'Dependent Variable' in a scientific experiment? The variable that changes in response to the manipulated variable being changed during the experiment.
Which is the 'Controlled Variable' in a scientific experiment? The variable that stays the same throughout the experiment. (Used as a comparison to the ones that do change)
In a scientific experiment, what is 'ethics?' Ethics are a set of rules that enable people to know right from wrong. Using ethics in an experiment means choosing to do what's right and protect others from danger.
In a scientific experiment, what is 'accuracy?' 'Accuracy' is description of how close data or measurements are to the true or correct value (like hitting the bullseye!)
In a scientific experiment, what is 'bias?' A personal and sometimes unreasonable judgement or prejudice.
In a scientific experiment, what is 'precision?' 'Precision' is when a set of data or measurements are the same or very close to the same. (But still may not be accurate.)
What is the difference between precision and accuracy? Precision means that repeated measurements are all similar (even if they're wrong) Accurate means that repeated measurements are all correct.
What is the difference between science and technology? Science is a way to learn about the world that we live in. Technology is a tool that makes life better or easier.
If you received a letter stating that you just won the lotto, you might be skeptical. What does skepticism mean? To doubt results or statements that might not be true.
What type of graph is used as a tool for finding patterns or trends in data? A line graph
In a scientific experiment, what is a 'conclusion?' A summary of what you have learned from an experiment
In a scientific experiment, what is a 'hypothesis?' A question that a scientist must answer through experimentation and observation. To be a hypothesis a question MUST be testable.
In a scientific experiment, what is 'data?' Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observation.
What are some circumstances in which a scientific theory might be rejected? When evidence contradicts a theory or when the results cannot be duplicated.
