Vocabulary from S.C. Support Document 4.E.2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| gases | do not have a definite shape, they completely fill the container they are in the molecules are very loosely packed and bounce all over the place |
| oxygen | a colorless, odorless gas present in the atmosphere; animals absorb oxygen during respiration while plants give off oxygen during respiration |
| carbon dioxide | a colorless, odorless gas present in the atmosphere; animals give off CO_2 during respiration while plants absorb CO_2 during respiration |
| water cycle | the movement of water from Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back again |
| troposphere | the lowest layer of the atmosphere which extends from the Earth’s surface to the stratosphere |
| nitrogen | a gas which makes up more that ¾ of Earth’s air in the atmosphere |
| atmosphere | the layer of gases that surrounds the planet and makes conditions on Earth suitable for living things. |
| water vapor | water in the state of a gas; clouds are made up of this |
| run-off | when precipitation falls on land surfaces, it attempts to return to the ocean or lakes as this |
| precipitation | any form of water that falls from clouds to Earth. Examples: snow, sleet, hail or rain |
| evaporation | when matter changes from a liquid to a gas -the process of evaporation results from the Sun’s heat energy -the liquid water on Earth becomes water vapor |
| condensation | when matter changes state from a gas to a liquid; the part of the water cycle where water vapor(gas) changes to water droplets(liquid) |
| weather maps | source used to help predict weather patterns by indicating high or low pressure systems, movement of air masses and fronts, or temperature changes |
| relative humidity | the amount of water vapor in the air; shown as a percentage |
| Celsius | a temperature scale that registers the freezing point of water as 0° and the boiling point as 100° |
| Fahrenheit | a temperature scale that registers the freezing point of water as 32° and the boiling point as 212° |
| temperature | the measure how much heat an object has |
| cloud | a visible mass of particles of water in the atmosphere |
| weather vane | instrument for measuring wind direction |
| qualitative | a type of observation that describes the qualities of something |
| quantitative | a type of observation that describes using measurements or amounts(number is usually involved) |
| snow | a type of precipitation that results from freezing temperatures in the air inside of clouds |
| sleet | a type of precipitation resulting from freezing air temperatures; may originally fall as snow, but after passing through warm air begins to melt, then it passes through another cold layer of air near the Eart causing it to refreeze. |
| hail | a type of precipitation that results from freezing temperatures in the air inside of clouds |
| radar | used to detect cloud cover, rainfall or storm location, intensity and movement and the potential for severe weather |
| climate | the average weather conditions over a long period of time |
| rain | a type of precipitation that results when temperatures are above freezing |
| weather phenomena | facts and occurrences that have to do with the weather |
| thunderstorm | heavy rainstorm with thunder and lightning |
| thermometer | instrument for measuring air temperature |
| meteorologist | a scientists that interprets information from a variety of sources and use those sources to make predictions |
| anemometer | instrument used for measuring wind speed |
| satellite | something that orbits around another, usually larger body |
| hurricane | tropical storm that has winds that reach a speed of 119 kilometers an hour |
| rain gauge | instrument for measuring the amount of precipitation |
| weather | the state of the atmosphere |
