Food Chains-
| Term | Definition |

| producer | Plants that use sunlight to "make" their own food. |
| consumer | Any animal that must eat other organisms to supply their needed energy to live |
| herbivore | a consumer that ONLY eats plants for energy |
| carnivore | a consumer that ONLY eats other animals for energy |
| omnivore | a consumer that eats BOTH plants and animals for energy |
| scavenger | a consumer that eats dead organisms (they don't hunt or kill) |
| decomposer | a consumer that BREAKS DOWN dead material and returns the nutrients back to the soil |
| thrive | to grow well; to prosper |
| perish | to pass away completely; to become destroyed; to die |
| food chain | the movement of energy from the Sun to producers then to consumers |
| food web | a system of interacting food chains within an ecosystem |
| carbon dioxide (CO2) | a gas produced by animals during respiration that plants use for photosynthesis |
| oxygen (O2) | a gas produced by plants during photosynthesis that animals use for respiration |
| transfer (flow) of energy | the movement of energy between the Sun and living organisms |
| respiration | a process by which animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide; breathing in and out |
| photosynthesis | the process by which plants make their own food using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide |
