Water Cycle

TermDefinition
water cycle a continuous cycle of Earth's water as it moves from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back down to Earth's surface.
evaporation process that occurs when heat from the Sun causes liquid water to become water vapor (a gas); and the water vapor rises.
condensation process that occurs when water vapor cools in the atmosphere and changes back into microscopic water droplets to form clouds
precipitation any type of water that falls from clouds like: rain, sleet, hail or snow.
transpiration process that occurs when water vapor is released from the leaves of plants
ground water water that goes into the soil and is stored in 'reservoirs' under the ground
atmosphere a mixture of gases (air) that surrounds the Earth.
fresh water water that does not have salt in it; found in lakes, rivers, ponds.
salt water water that does have salt in it; found in oceans and seas.
accumulate (accumulation) to collect (or gather) and keep something.
run-off what happens when too much rainwater flows quickly off Earth's surface and into a river, lake, ocean, etc.
sun a huge ball of gases around which the Earth and other planets of the solar system revolve; the Sun is a star that provides Earth with most of its light and thermal energy
ocean the body of salt water that covers nearly three fourths of the surface of the Earth and 97% of Earth's water
water vapor the gas state of water that is in air
solar energy the light and heat energy that comes from the sun
cycle a set of actions that happen again and again in the same order : a repeating series of events or actions.
