Ocean(Chapters24&25)
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Salinity | the concentration of dissolved salts in water etc., usually expressed in parts per thousand by weight. |
thermocline | a steep temperature gradient in a body of water such as a lake, marked by a layer above and below which the water is at different temperatures. |
Coriolis Effect | The result of Earth's rotation on weather patterns and ocean currents. Makes storms swirl clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere |
gyre | A gyre in oceanography is any large system of circulating ocean currents, particularly those involved with large wind movements |
gyre part 2. | Gyres are caused by the Coriolis effect; planetary vorticity along with horizontal and vertical friction, determine the circulation patterns from the wind curl (torque). |
Gulf Stream | A warm ocean current of the northern Atlantic Ocean off eastern North America. It flows northward and eastward from the Gulf of Mexico, eventually dividing into several branches. |
Gulf Stream part 2. | A major branch continues eastward to warm the coast and moderate the climate of northwest Europe. |
Antarctic Circumpolar Current | The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is an ocean current that flows clockwise from west to east around Antarctica. An alternative name for the ACC is the West Wind Drift. |
sargassum | a brown seaweed with berrylike air bladders, typically forming large floating masses. |
density | the degree of compactness of a substance. |
