Urinary System

| Urinary frequency | the need to urinate at frequent intervals |

| Incontinence | inability to control the release of urine from the bladder |
| Intake and output | measuring all fluids taken into the bodya and eliminated from the body to determine fluid balance |
| Dehydration | a lack of fluid in the body |
| Edema | retention of fluid in the body tissues (swelling) |
| Void | to urinate |
| Catheter | a tube inserted into the urinary bladder to drain the urine |
| Meatus | the external opening of teh urinary system, where the urine is released |
| Dialysis | to artificially clean the blood with machines and/or solutions |
| Homeostasis | a state of balance within th body where everything is in correct proportion |
| Cystitis | inflammation of the bladder due to pathogenic microorganisms causing an infection |
| Nephritis | inflammation of the kidney due to pathogenic microorganisms causing an infection |
| Kidney Stones (renal calculi) | occur when substances within the urine begin to precipitate out of the solution and clump together. It may occur in the blader, kidney, or tubes. |
| Kidney Failure/Renal Failure | may occur suddenly (acute failure) due to a disease process, or gradually as the kidneys begin to slow and eventually shut down. The kidneys do not function properly. |
| Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy | a common condition that may occur in older men if the rostate gland enlarges |
