Respiratory System Unit

| Semi-Fowlers position | a semi-sitting position with the head of the bed raised 30-45 degrees |
| Cyanosis | a bluish color of the skin, lips, and nail beds due to lack of oxygen |
| Sputum | mucus produced within the lungs |
| Non-productive coughing | no sputum is produced with the coughing |
| Expectorate | the act of coughing up and spitting out sputum |
| Cheyne-Stokes | a respiratory pattern that alternates between periods of dyspnea and periods of apnea |
| Kussmaul's respiration | rapid and deep respirations (air hunger) |
| Nasal cannula | a soft plastic tube with nasal "prongs" that extend into the nares of the noe to administer supplemental oxygen |
| Oxygen mask | a molded plastic mask that covers the nose and mouth area in order to provide supplemental oxygen |
| Oxygen tent | a plastic sheet is used to surround the bed area. Additional oxygen is then added to the air the patient breathes |
| Incentive spirometer | a device used to encourage the patient to breathe deeply and to measure the volume of air that the person inhales |
