Geocentric Theory | An astronomical theory which describes the universe as a Geocentric system, i.e., a system which puts the Earth in the center of the universe, and describes other objects from the point of view of the Earth. |
Milky Way Galaxy | The galaxy of which the sun and the solar system are a part and which contains the myriads of stars that create the light of the Milky Way. |
Planets | A celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. |
Sun | The star around which the earth orbits. |
Corona | The rarefied gaseous envelope of the sun and other stars. The sun's corona is normally visible only during a total solar eclipse when it is seen as an irregularly shaped pearly glow surrounding the darkened disk of the moon. |
Asteroids | a small rocky body orbiting the sun. |
Meteor | a small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere, becoming incandescent as a result of friction and appearing as a streak of light. |
Comet | a celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice and dust and, when near the sun, a “tail” of gas and dust particles pointing away from the sun. |
Asteroid Belt | is the circum stellar disc in the Solar System located roughly between the orbits of the planets Mars and Jupiter. |
Revolution | an instance of revolving. a single orbit of one object around another or about an axis or center. |
Orbit | the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon, especially a periodic elliptical revolution. |
Rotation | the action of rotating around an axis or center. |
Gravity | the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. For most purposes Newton's laws of gravity apply, with minor modifications to take the general theory of relativity into account. |
Phases Of The Moon | is the shape of the illuminated (sunlit) portion of the Moon as seen by an observer on Earth. |
Waxing | the moon at any time after new moon and before full moon, so called because its illuminated area is increasing. |
Waning | pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon decreases |
Crescent | pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon increases |
Gibbous | more than half full |
Alignment of moon, sun, and Earth | When the sun, moon, and Earth are in alignment (at the time of the new or full moon), the solar tide has an additive effect on the lunar tide, creating extra-high high tides, and very low, low tides—both commonly called spring tides. |
Solar Eclipse | an eclipse in which the sun is obscured by the moon. |
Lunar Eclipse | an eclipse in which the moon appears darkened as it passes into the earth's shadow. |
Neap Tides | either of the two tides that occur at the first or last quarter of the moon when the tide-generating forces of the sun and moon oppose each other and produce the smallest rise and fall in tidal level |
Spring Tides | the large rise and fall of the tide at or soon after the new or the full moon. |
Heliocentric Theory | The theory that the Earth revolves around the sun. |
