__FREEMAN ES SOL 1

Mrs. Freeman's ES SOL Review # 1 Scientific Investigation

QuestionAnswer
A hypothesis is a prediction about a problem that can be tested.
A variable is a changeable factor in an experiment.
Constants. are factors that are the same
Scientific theories are systematic sets of concepts that offer explanations for observed patterns in nature. Any valid scientific theory has passed tests designed to invalidate it.
Scientific laws. are generalizations of observational data that describe patterns and relationships
Density = mass/volume
The SI Units for Density are : grams/cm3 or g/mL
Volume for irregular objects is found by water displacement.
Water is the most dense as a liquid.
The Density of water = 1 g/mL
Warm (air – water - magma) rises because it is less dense.
As pressure increases so does density
The same substance has the same density.
As mass increases so does the volume
The altitude of Polaris. equals your Latitude
Latitude lines run east to west but are measured north and south of the Equator.
Longitude lines run north to south but are measures east and west of the Prime Meridian.
The closer the Contour Lines the steeper the slope of the land.
Contour lines form V's and point upstream of rivers
Cold (air - water - magma) Sinks. because it is more dense
The Independent Variable is the variable changed by the experimenter
The Dependent Variable is the final result measured at the end of the experiment
The Independent Variable is graphed on the _____ axis X
The Dependent Variable is graphed on the _____ axis Y
A control is used to compare an experiment to the situation that would occur normally or is not given the experimental conditions
contour lines are used to show the change in elevation on a topographic map
Index contours are the lines that are darkened and have numbers on them to help use read a topographic map
topographic maps are used to show change in elevation on a map
Rivers on a topographic map are shown by a V shape pointing to the source of the river
Water runs __________ on all maps downhill
Why is there distortion on a map? Maps are models of a 3D surface in a 2D format
Maps that are of a smaller area have ________ distortion and maps of larger areas have _______ distortion. less more
Contour lines that are close together indication an area that is steep on a topographic map

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
